Normal To Have Pain From Whiplash Months After Car Accident?

Is it normal to have pain from whiplash months after a car accident?

I was in a car accident several months ago and got whiplash. I still have neck pain. Is this normal?

DEAR READER:

The neck contains a stack of bones (vertebrae) with joints between them. The bones are attached to muscles and ligaments that hold them together, and that hold the neck upright, allowing it to move as your head moves.

Whiplash — the term used to describe a group of symptoms and also the typical accident that leads to them — can damage one or more of these delicate structures. Whiplash is most commonly caused by car crashes, particularly those in which another car plows into the back of your car.

We used to think that the initial impact of whiplash jerked the head and neck back and then forward. Now we know there is a critical moment or two before that back-and-forth. When your car is hit from behind, your torso is pushed forward while your chin is forced down. Seen from the side, your neck momentarily looks like an S, as the upper and lower areas are unnaturally forced in different directions. (I’ve put an illustration of this below.)

The force of a rear-end collision momentarily pushes the trunk forward and the chin down, forcing the cervical spine into an S shape and possibly damaging delicate structures.

Researchers now believe that this “S phase” of whiplash is when injury is most likely to occur, as the muscles, ligaments and joints strain to hold the vertebrae.

Whiplash can cause a range of symptoms. They include stiffness, neck and shoulder pain; muscle spasms in the neck or upper shoulders; decreased range of motion; and tingling or weakness in the arms.

What’s to be done? If you haven’t already, begin gentle range-of-motion exercises and then neck-strengthening exercises. It’s best to seek treatment from a Chiropractor or specialist that handles Auto Accidents to get this started and to learn how to do these exercises properly. Strong neck muscles decrease the stress on other muscles, disks and vertebrae. This gives damaged tissue a chance to heal.

Various pills are sometimes prescribed — tricyclic medicines, SSRI medicines, gabapentin — but the evidence that they help is limited. Because of the muscle spasms that can develop with whiplash, the muscle-relaxing treatment called Botox (botulinum toxin) has been tried. However, there’s little evidence that it helps in whiplash.

Facet joint injections may also help. Joints are places where two bones meet. Facet joints are one of the places where two vertebrae meet; the bone above meets the bone below in several different places, or joints. The facet joints provide stability and help guide motion. Facet joint injections help numb pain and reduce inflammation.

Less commonly, radiofrequency neurotomy may be used. This procedure uses heat to block nerves from conducting pain signals.

Whiplash damage to muscles and ligaments should heal within a few months. If your symptoms continue, talk with your doctor. He or she can check for injuries to the facet joints and disks. On very rare occasions, there may be a problem that can be corrected by surgery. But most people recover from whiplash through Chiropractic and regular exercise.

Broken Hearts

3/10/2015

Put your hand on your chest and feel your heartbeat. Now put your hands where you can feel your pulse. That pulse is the signature of your being. Your heart, creating pulses, is working for you every minute of the day, every day of the year, and every year of your entire life. If you live in average lifetime, your heart will be about 3 billion times.
Now take a moment to realize that during the time it took you to read the above paragraph an artery in the heart of roughly 1 American clogged up, cut of blood flow and started a rapid process of tissue and cell death.  This process is better known, of course, as a heart attack. By the time you finish reading this page, 4 Americans will have had a heart attack, and another four will have fallen prey to stroke or heart failure. Over the next 24 hours, 3000 Americans will have heart attacks, roughly the same number of people who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The heart is the centerpiece of life and, more often than not in America, it is the centerpiece of death. Malfunction of the heart and or circulation system will kill 40% of Americans, more than those killed by any other country or ailments, including cancer. Heart disease has been our number one cause of death for almost 100 years. This disease does not recognize gender or race boundaries: all are affected. If you were asked most women what disease process the greatest risk to them, heart disease or breast cancer, many women would undoubtedly say breast cancer. But they would be wrong. Women's death rate from her disease is eight times higher than your death rate from breast cancer. If there is an "American" game, it is called baseball: an "American" desert, apple pie. If there is an "American" disease, it is heart disease.

Statins may provoke heart failure and atherosclerosis

2/20/2015

Picture
As most of you know, February is American Heart Month, and during this month we see a great deal of public attention placed on cholesterol levels and cardiovascular disease. The current widely-held belief of the general public is that cholesterol reduction with statins decreases atherosclerosis. However, there is an interesting article just published February 6, 2015 in the Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology showing that statins actually stimulate atherosclerosis and heart failure.

This new study validates the theory that statins may be causative in coronary artery calcification and can be toxic to the  mitochondria, impairing muscle function in the heart and blood vessels through the depletion of CoQ10 and ‘heme A’ and, consequently, ATP generation. The study demonstrated that statins inhibit the synthesis of vitamin K2, which is an important cofactor for matrix Gla-protein activation. This is responsible for the protection of the arteries from calcification. In addition, statins inhibit the biosynthesis of selenium-containing proteins such as glutathione peroxidase that suppresses peroxidative stress. An impairment of selenoprotein biosynthesis may be a contributing factor in congestive heart failure similar to cardiomyopathies seen with selenium deficiency. The epidemic of heart failure and atherosclerosis, therefore, may paradoxically be aggravated by the prevalent use of statin medication. The researchers propose that the current statin treatment guidelines be seriously reevaluated.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, yet in many instances it may be prevented when individuals make healthy dietary and lifestyle choices.

Nutrients that help support cardiovascular health and lipid levels:
  • Plant sterols have been shown to be beneficial for individuals that have not responded well to dietary modifications. Phytosterols have significant LDL cholesterol-lowering properties, as they inhibit absorption of cholesterol by lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels.
  • Dietary fiber supports cholesterol and triglyceride reduction.
  • Fish oils  have a dramatic effect on lowering triglycerides and have a significant effect on improving LDL and HDL particle size that is not typically seen on the traditional lipid panel.
  • Other nutrients that have lipid-lowering properties include niacin, red yeast rice, annatto tocotrienols and berberine.

How Safe And Effective Are Vaccines?

1/28/2015

How safe and effective are vaccines?  Let the pharmaceutical companies tell you themselves!

Take a look at these Vaccine inserts:

The 1st photo clearly shows the flu shot label admitting the shot contains "thimerosal as a preservative." Thimerosal is made from toxic mercury.

Mecury is a toxic substance that should not even be touched.  Though it is being injected into people's bodies from these shots.

The 2nd photo of the vaccine insert says:

FLULAVAL is a vaccine indicated for active immunization against influenza disease... but doesn't ever claim the vaccine actually works.

In the very next bullet point, the vaccine insert admits:

...there have been no controlled trials adequately demonstrating a decrease in influenza disease after vaccination with FLULAVAL.

If you do decide to inject you or your family with these chemicals, you would hope that there would be at least 1 controlled trial demonstrating the effectiveness of the vaccine.  According to them, there is not....

The 3rd photo explains:

"Safety and effectiveness of FLULAVAL in pediatric patients have not been established."

The same insert also says, "FLULAVAL have not been evaluated for carcinogenic or mutagenic potential, or for impairment of fertility."

Goes on to state about Pregnant Women: There are, however, no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women.

What this statement says is, essentially, "We have no evidence this is safe in pregnant women, but it's okay to inject pregnant women with this anyway, as long as they need it."

If you are injecting you or your family, don't you think it would be in your best interest to know: 1) It's safe to give to my child. 2) If it's going to cause Cancer to my child or me. 3) If it is going to damage or mutate the DNA of my child or me. 4) Why are you injecting pregnant women when you don't know what it is doing to the unborn baby?

The 4th photo goes on to state all the side effects reported by actual users after being vaccinated. In other words, these are the results of turning the human population into vaccine guinea pigs.

Just some of the adverse effects experienced after flu shot vaccines include:

• Eye pain and chest pain
• Arthritis
• Dizziness, tremors and losing consciousness (syncope)
• Convulsions and seizures
• Gullain-Barre Syndrome
• Cranial nerve paralysis or limb paralysis
• Swelling of the brain
• Partial facial paralysis
... and much more.

Hmmmmm.  The flu or paralysis?  I think I will take my chances with the flu!

The 5th photo is from the CDC.  The CDC openly admits that mercury, formaldehyde, MSG, aluminum, antibiotics and other chemicals are still used in vaccines.

When people come to their senses and realize they probably shouldn't inject themselves and their children with mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum and other toxic vaccine ingredients, they are quickly met with opposition from doctors, teachers, nurses, friends, family, etc.  I have been studying Vaccines for over a decade and am able to back my views because of my constant reading and researching on the subject.  You are the only one that should be able to make medical decisions about your family and to do that, YOU NEED TO BE EDUCATED!  Keep reading.  Keep researching. Keep persevering!

Chiropractic Is A Family Affair!

10/30/2014

My family and I have been seeing Dr. Chad for about five years now. We started coming because my husband hurt his back and a coworker of his recommended Dr. Chad. I have to admit that at first I was very skeptical about chiropractic in general. I started my own research about the pros and cons of the profession. I found varied responses thus I was struggling for a while as who to trust.  After piles and piles of information I decided that I would trust myself and with what makes sense. My children are suffering from asthma and allergies. Every time when the weather changed they would become sick with runny and stuffed noses and cough with heavy mucus discharge which often made them vomit.  I can confirm that since we started seeing Dr. Chad their symptoms are decreased. Besides the adjustments, to which we come weekly, we follow Dr. Chad’s advice about healthy food choices and using the right supplements. I have to admit that eating healthy is expensive but considering we have only one body in this life we should take Good care of it as much as we can. Throughout the years Dr. Chad was very helpful and patient with the “tons” of questions that I had.  I know that I will still have questions but I also know that there are undeniable benefits to one’s health from chiropractic adjustments.  -Trpceski Family

5 Tips For A Healthy Halloween And Top Secret Trick!

10/22/2014

Picture
Trick or treat! Halloween is just around the corner, and you know what that means:  Candy... And Calories... And Cavities... And Hyperactive kids.  Childhood obesity is increasing at an alarming rate. Nearly one in three children are overweight or obese in the United States. This year Americans will spend close to $2 billion on Halloween candy and approximately 10 percent of the nation’s medical costs on obesity related diseases.

While kids love to dress in costumes and cause mischief, parents dread the thought of all the leftover candy and tremendous amounts of calories that accompany the day. It’s alright to indulge treats, just don’t forget to practice moderation. Halloween is the perfect time of year to begin practicing balance and mindfulness when it comes to eating. Halloween kicks off the holiday season with Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and then Valentine’s Day just around the corner.  When trick or treaters ring your doorbell, what will you offer? This year try nutritious foods, fun non-food items, and items that encourage activity.  I have put together 5 things you can do to limit the amount of candy and pounds you could potentially put on.

BE CALORIE CONSCIOUS

Weight management is always a challenge but more so during the holidays. The secret to success is calorie intake, which means choosing appropriate portions and remembering that extra bites add up. It takes only an additional 100 calories a day above what you need to lead to extra 10lb weight gain in a year.

PROCRASTINATE

Purchase Halloween candy the day of trick or treating to avoid temptation. Buy less than what you think you will need to avoid leftovers and purchase candies that you do not like, if you still have leftovers place them out of sight. If you really have a hard time with temptation choose to pass out non-candy treats such as bouncy balls, spider rings, pencils, erasers, bubbles or stickers. Also,   Donate: There are numerous programs and establishments from dentists to children’s hospitals that will take that candy off your hands. You can also donate candy to the troops via care packages through Operation Gratitude. Make sure you and your kids include a personal letter as well to thank the troops for doing what they do.

EAT BEFORE YOU TRICK OR TREAT

Serve a healthy family dinner before the fun begins, this way the kids will not be tempted to eat candy along the way. After trick or treating, offer a cup of warm, low fat milk with just one treat to ensure that blood sugar is stable before bedtime. Sign a contract between you and your children regarding when and how much candy all of you can eat.

STAY ACTIVE

Take a long walk around your neighborhood while trick or treating and enjoy all the decorations and costumes that kids have on.

PRACTICE PORTION CONTROL

After trick or treating sort the candy, inspect them and then set boundaries on an amount to be eaten over a period of many days. You can easily reach 100 calories with just one or two snack size treats. There are actually some candies that can satisfy your sweet tooth with fewer calories!

Always choose fun size candy bars based on the least amount of fat and calories per serving. Better choices are, 3 Musketeers, 100 Grand Bar, Butterfinger bar, Milky Way bar, Raisinets, Starburst and York Peppermint Patties. Lastly always choose healthier dark chocolate versions. Most candy has a long shelf-life. Put the “stash" out of reach and limit candy to two pieces per day. Larger treats, such as full chocolate bars, can be cut into smaller pieces and frozen.

Top Secret Trick

And lastly, a little trick that I use with my kids.  Put the candy in the fridge or freezer.  It makes it hard to chew and I find the kids don’t eat as much.  They will sometimes lose interest by the time it defrosts and they forget about it.

Follow these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for everyone!

EWG's Good Seafood Guide

9/26/2014

Which Seafood is the best to eat, but has the least amount of Mercury in it?The risk of mercury poisoning by eating seafood is real -- if you eat a lot of fish or seafood, as I do. Pregnant women and young children are especially at risk and should avoid the fish on the "avoid" list, even some that are low in mercury, make poor choices for other reasons, most often because they have been fished so extensively that their numbers are perilously low. Mercury is known to bioaccumulate in humans, so bioaccumulation in seafood carries over into human populations where it can result in Mercury poisoning. It is dangerous to both natural ecosystems and humans since it is a metal known to be highly toxic, especially due to its ability to damage the central nervous system. In human-controlled ecosystems of fish, usually done for market production of wanted seafood, mercury clearly rises through the food chain via fish consuming small plankton, as well as through non-food sources such as underwater sediment. This mercury grows in concentration within the bodies of fish and can be measured in the tissues of selected species.  The presence of mercury in fish can be particularly a health issue for women who are or may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and young children.
